Brewer’s Steak 🍺
Today, I share with you a quite simple but really hearty dish from my husband’s home region of Lower Saxony.
Germany is the land of pork. 🐷 (Causing occasional outbursts among morons far removed from the political centre. ➡️💩)
More importantly, though, Germany is also the land of a thousand beers. 🍺
Therefore, it is not surprising that a combination of both is particularly popular in down-to-earth regions such as Lower Saxony. 🙂
If you are vegan or cannot eat pork for other reasons or if you do not consume alcohol, please click on or find suitable replacement ingredients.
But if you appreciate pork steaks and dark beer, this dish might be just the right thing for you. 😋
What we need:
- 3 pork neck steaks
- 4 onions
- Salt
- Pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp thyme
- 500ml (1pt) Schwarzbier (black lager)
- Olive oil
How to do it:
- Cut the onions into medium-sized pieces.
- Pour some oil into a heated pan and fry the unseasoned steaks over medium heat.
- When nicely brown, turn the steaks in the pan and season the already fried sides with salt and pepper.
- Once nicely brown, take the steaks out of the pan and season the yet unseasoned sides with salt and pepper.
- Put the onions and garlic powder into the pan, mix well.
- After 5 minutes, add the thyme and mix well.
- Pour the beer and put the steaks back into the pan. Let everything simmer for 15 minutes.
- If deemed necessary, use dark gravy thickener after taking out the steaks.
As side dish, we highly recommend boiled potatoes.

The beer would be long gone by then. 💁♀️🍺
That’s no problem for us. We prefer to drink Pilsner over Schwarzbier. 🍺😋
