Finally… the sea

“Ah yes, the sea is always good. There is nothing I can look at for very long, except the sea.”

King Haggard (from “The Last Unicorn”)

Unfortunately, Harry was indisposed on the first day after our arrival on the island of Spiekeroog so that we were unable to leave the apartment all day.

But on the second day, I finally got to see the sea again from the viewing points on the islands.

Sure, I had seen the sea from the ferry and from the beach side at Dornumersiel a few days prior. But the view from the “Höhenweg” (high trail) is second to none.

We left the apartment (red spot 1) at around 11 a.m. and Harry needed to grab some food first. He had hoped to get a “Fischbrötchen” (bread roll with fish) at the “Meeresfrüchtchen” (translates to “little sea food”) fish restaurant (red spot 2) but they turned out to be closed on Wednesdays.

So we decided, we would make a stop at the beach restaurant “Strandhalle” (red spot 3) at the Eastern end of the “Höhenweg” which we would have passed anyway.

Harry had a schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce. I wasn’t hungry so I only drank a cola.

After enjoying the sea view from the vantage points along the “Höhenweg” for quite a while (red spots 4, 5, 6), we decided to stroll along the paved paths through the western dunes (red spot 7). From there, the route led us over the dyke (red spot 8) towards the harbor area (red spot 9).

We certainly won’t be strolling that path on the dyke again as it turned out not really wheelchair-friendly.

But we made it through and also had a nice conversation with a lovely lady and her preteen daughter who were really interested in what I was all about.

Unfortunately, the weather turned bad and we only just made it back to the apartment (red spot 10). It rained through the rest of the day, so we had to postpone our plans to watch the sunset.
